A proper washing routine does more than create that fresh sheet feeling. It also protects the natural cotton fibers and helps your bedding last for years.

Read the Care Instructions First
Before placing any bedding in the washing machine, check the care label. Cotton sheets may look similar, but differences in construction and finishing can affect how they should be laundered.
For Red Land Cotton bedding, we recommend washing sheets before their first use. Machine wash them in cold water, avoid bleach, and tumble dry on low heat. You may also lay them flat or hang them to dry. A warm iron can be used if desired, but our bedding should not be dry cleaned.
Wash Cotton Sheets Separately
One of the simplest ways to care for cotton sheets is to give them their own load. Heavy clothing, towels, zippers, and buttons can create unnecessary friction or snag the fabric. Washing sheets separately also gives them enough room to move freely through the water, helping detergent and rinse water reach the entire surface.
Avoid overloading the washing machine. A fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcases need space to circulate so they can come out thoroughly clean.
Use Cold or Warm Water
When deciding what temperature to wash cotton sheets, cold or warm water is usually the best choice. These gentler temperatures clean everyday perspiration, body oils, and dust without placing excessive stress on the fibers.
Repeated washing in hot water may cause cotton bedding to shrink and wear more quickly. Unless the care label states otherwise or there is a specific need for a hotter wash, keep the temperature low to help preserve the sheets’ size, color, and strength.
Choose a Gentle Detergent
More detergent does not necessarily mean cleaner sheets. Using too much can leave residue behind, making cotton bedding feel stiff instead of fresh.
Choose a mild detergent designed for natural fibers, and use only the recommended amount. Avoid harsh chemicals, chlorine bleach, fabric softeners, and heavily fragranced laundry products. Bleach can weaken cotton fibers and affect colored or patterned bedding. Conventional fabric softeners may coat the fibers and reduce cotton’s natural breathability.
If stains are present, treat them as soon as possible with a gentle stain remover before starting the wash cycle.
Select a Gentle Wash Cycle
A normal or gentle cycle is typically all that quality cotton sheets need. The goal is to remove buildup without subjecting the fabric to excessive agitation.
Most households should wash bed sheets about once a week. More frequent washing may be helpful during warm weather, if pets sleep in the bed, or if someone experiences night sweats or allergies. Regular washing prevents perspiration, oils, allergens, and skin cells from accumulating.
Dry Cotton Sheets on Low Heat
Cotton sheets can be safely dried in a machine. Choose a low heat setting and remove the bedding promptly when the cycle finishes. This helps protect the natural fibers, limit shrinkage, and reduce wrinkles.
High dryer temperatures can make cotton sheets shrink and may weaken the fabric over time. If you prefer air drying, hang the sheets on a line or lay them flat in a clean, well-ventilated area. You can also remove them from the dryer while they are slightly damp and allow them to finish drying naturally.
A few soft wrinkles are normal in natural cotton fabric. We appreciate them as part of the relaxed beauty of bedding made without chemical treatments intended to prevent wrinkling.
