Growing up in the South gifts you the experience of treading through waist-high flowers in the bright hot sun. Helmsie’s hand-drawn Lula pattern is sourced from that nostalgic memory; of remembering tiny wild strawberries at your feet, weeds four feet tall in every direction, and summers that feel like they will never end.
At home embroideries and hand painted Americana folk art can be seen as influences in the repeated pattern. Lula’s warm and cozy colorful florals are timeless, a family heirloom in the making.
Designed by Karla Pruitt of Helmsie, the pattern was originally named “Altoona” after the town her mother’s family lives in. It’s near Gadsden, Alabama. She noted “it feels full circle that it’s going to come to life in Alabama!”. We couldn't agree more.
Growing up on the farm, some of my fondest memories are from days spent with my cousins tromping through fields at the farm. Putting biscuits in our pockets and going out and making mischief, riding four wheelers through tall grass and streams of water.
When I look at this print, I can smell those care free summers and it makes me nostalgic. I think that's what drew me to it when I was flipping through Helmsie's catalog of beautiful prints. This print makes me happy — and sometimes we just need something that makes us happy.
Helmsie has been a design partner of Red Land Cotton since 2023 when we released our Hydrangea Print Collection together. We love the whimsy, color and feminism of their art and know The Lula Collection will be loved by our customers just as much as the designs that have come before!
