When you choose a Red Land Cotton matelassé, you choose more than bedding. You choose American craftsmanship still practiced on historic looms in Maine. Since 2018, we have partnered with Maine Heritage Weavers to weave these pieces with care, precision, and pride.
This partnership reflects shared values around quality, longevity, and American-made manufacturing. It also supports skilled craftspeople whose expertise cannot be replicated by modern mass production.
Woven, Not Quilted
Matelassé is often mistaken for quilting. It is actually a weaving technique that creates a raised texture directly in the fabric. No extra layers. No stitching on top. Just an intricate structure formed on the loom itself.
This method produces a breathable, durable textile with beautiful dimensions. It layers easily year-round and holds up to daily use and frequent washing. The result feels substantial without being heavy.
You can see this craftsmanship across our Matelassé Collection:
Powder Blue Matelassé Throw – A soft, lightweight throw with a subtle raised pattern, perfect for layering on sofas or beds. Its powder blue hue adds calm, classic charm to any room.

Classic Matelassé Bedspread and Shams Bundle – This bundle includes a bedspread and matching shams, offering a complete, cohesive look for your bed. The textured matelassé weave adds elegance while remaining durable for everyday use.

Classic Matelassé Bedspread – A standalone bedspread with a refined raised pattern, ideal for layering or showcasing on its own. Its durable weave ensures comfort and longevity for years to come.

Each piece is woven in Maine using techniques refined over generations.
A Mill with Deep Roots in American Textiles
The expertise behind these products traces back to Bates Manufacturing Company, founded in 1850 in Lewiston, Maine. Bates became known for producing some of the finest woven bedspreads in the country and helped define New England’s textile reputation for more than a century.
When Bates closed in 2001, the knowledge and equipment could have disappeared. Instead, that legacy was preserved by the team that would go on to form Maine Heritage Weavers, carrying forward the same standards and weaving traditions.
Today, those same methods are used to produce Red Land Cotton’s blankets and matelassé pieces.
Why This Partnership Matters
Since we began working together in 2018, Maine Heritage Weavers has doubled its workforce. That growth comes directly from demand for American-made quality and long-lasting textiles.
Every throw, blanket, and bedspread woven for Red Land Cotton supports skilled jobs. It keeps historic looms running and preserves a rare craft still practiced at a high level in the United States.
This is not outsourced production. This is a partnership of hands-on weaving by experienced craftspeople.
Built to Last for Generations
Sustainability is often discussed in terms of materials. We believe longevity is just as important. Products that last for decades reduce waste and avoid constant replacement.
Matelassé and woven blankets are naturally durable because of how they are constructed. The structure comes from the weave itself, not added layers that can break down over time.

These pieces are made to be used daily, washed often, and passed down. They are designed to look better with age, not worse.
The Value of American-Made Bedding
American-made still matters for reasons you can feel and reasons you cannot see. You can feel the weight, texture, and consistency that comes from careful weaving. You cannot see the accountability, fair labor, and transparency behind where and how it is made.
Working with Maine Heritage Weavers allows us to stand behind every product with confidence. We know who wove it. We know how it was made. We know the standards it met before it left the loom.
That level of oversight is rare in modern textile production.
From Loom to Home
There is something special about bringing a woven piece into your home that was made on historic equipment by skilled American hands. It connects your everyday routines to a long tradition of craftsmanship and care.
Whether it is a throw at the end of the bed or a full matelassé bedspread, these pieces add texture, warmth, and story to your space. They are practical, beautiful, and built with intention.
That is what makes them different from mass-produced alternatives.
A Shared Commitment to Quality
Red Land Cotton’s focus has always been on making fewer, better products. Partnering with Maine Heritage Weavers allows us to do exactly that for our blankets and matelassé collection.
Together, we prioritize quality over speed, durability over trends, and heritage over shortcuts. The result is bedding you can rely on for years to come.
When you choose these pieces, you are choosing craftsmanship, sustainability through longevity, and the continued story of American textile manufacturing woven into every thread.
